We often bring our two cats Pablo and Wincey to sit with us when we sit on the front porch. As kittens they sat on our laps in the living room by the wood stove. They normally lived in the kitchen and sunroom because their hair was too much for the rest of the house. It was a treat for them to be on our laps in the living room. When they tried to escape we taught them if they did, they go right back in the kitchen, so they learn to stay put. It’s easy to halt the fluff bombs in their tracks on the porch if they try anything. They stop when we barely scold them.

They also learned to run inside when we open the front door if we tell them the party’s over. Last night Dave sent Wincey in and I wasn’t paying attention and figured Pab had gone in too. We ate dinner and watched a movie. During that three hours, Wincey let out a few weird howls which he does regularly. When Dave asked where Pablo was, I jumped up, ran onto the porch and called his name as nonchalantly as possible to not scare him. In a few seconds, guess who waddled out of the porch ferns?

A friend with a coy pond is selling her house. Among an assortment of goldfish she had one big stylish white coy who told me “whoever buys this house may not appreciate me.” The other day my friend called to say I was welcome to take him to my pond if I could catch him. I brought a net. She had one too but the thing was smart, the water muddy and I got soaked trying to outsmart him. I even built a wier trap out of 24” black plastic pot and old mosquito netting but in one try, he outsmarted that.

I could feel him pass over my feet now and then, why I thought it was him, I don’t know. I could see nothing and all my friend’s fish were realativily big as well. I tried everything but the muddy water made things impossible. I prayed for a sign as to whether I should give up then felt something near my feet again. I bent over and slowly reached for God knows what and Mikado was in my hands. Mikado means “exalted gate to the palace.”
